Communication is rarely a barrier for international divers visiting Komodo. The dive industry in Labuan Bajo is well-equipped to serve a global clientele.
English is the primary language of instruction at all major dive centres in Labuan Bajo. Dive briefings, safety protocols, course materials, and guides are conducted in English as standard. Most divemasters and instructors are either native English speakers or highly fluent.
Many dive centres also offer instruction and guiding in additional languages:
| Language | Availability | Dive Centres Known For This |
|---|---|---|
| English | All centres (standard) | All operators |
| Bahasa Indonesia | All centres | All operators |
| French | Several centres | Dragon Dive Komodo, Azul Komodo |
| German | Some centres | Varies by season and staff |
| Spanish | Some centres | Varies by season and staff |
| Japanese | Select centres | Varies by season and staff |
| Mandarin / Chinese | Growing availability | Some operators with Chinese-speaking guides |
Both PADI and SSI certification courses offer e-learning and physical manuals in dozens of languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and many more. Even if your instructor speaks English, you can study the theory portion in your native language before arriving in Komodo.
Tip: If instruction in a specific language is important to you, contact your chosen dive centre in advance to confirm availability. Staff rotations mean language availability can change by season.
