The PADI Rescue Diver course makes you a safer, more self-reliant diver. Learn to anticipate and manage dive emergencies, assist others underwater, and develop the awareness that sets great divers apart.
The PADI Rescue Diver course is widely regarded as the most challenging — and most rewarding — diver certification available. You'll learn to identify and manage diving emergencies, assist distressed divers, and respond effectively to underwater accidents.
The course involves realistic scenario training that requires problem-solving under pressure. Many divers say the Rescue Diver course transformed them into far more confident, aware, and capable divers overall. In Komodo, training takes place in real open-water conditions, preparing you for the genuine situations you may encounter anywhere in the world.
The Rescue Diver course is demanding wherever you do it — but Komodo's operational complexity makes it an exceptional training environment. Learning to manage dive emergencies in varied, realistic conditions builds competence that stays with you for life.

Not all dive centers are created equal. Here's what to look for when choosing where to do your PADI course in Komodo.
Instructor Experience
Look for instructors with hundreds of certifications completed. Ask about their rating — IDC Staff Instructors and Course Directors have the highest PADI training. Check if they speak your language fluently.
Safety Standards
Ensure they have emergency oxygen, first aid kits, and DAN insurance. Ask about their emergency action plan and evacuation procedures. Check if they service regulators annually and maintain equipment regularly.
Equipment Quality
Ask to see the equipment beforehand. Well-maintained, modern equipment (Scubapro, Mares, Apeks) works better and safer. Check BCD functionality, regulator breathing ease, and wetsuit condition.
Group Size
PADI allows up to 8 students per instructor, but smaller is better. 2–4 students means more personalised attention, a slower pace, and better skill development. Worth paying extra for.
Boat Quality
Comfortable boats with toilets, shade, and good safety equipment make long days more enjoyable. Ask about boat size, facilities, and whether they have spare boats for emergencies.
Reviews & Reputation
Read recent reviews focusing on instructor patience, safety culture, and how they handle nervous students. Consistent 4.5+ star ratings over 50+ reviews indicate reliable quality.

The PADI Rescue Diver course is widely considered the most challenging and rewarding course in the PADI system. It teaches you to look beyond yourself, prevent problems before they happen, and manage dive emergencies with confidence. In Komodo, the course typically takes 3–4 days.
Knowledge Development
Complete the PADI Rescue Diver eLearning or classroom sessions covering five knowledge development sections. Topics include self-rescue, recognising diver stress, emergency management, equipment problems, and responding to unresponsive divers.
Rescue Exercises
Practise 10 rescue exercises in confined and open water with your instructor. These include panicked diver scenarios, tired diver tows, missing diver procedures, underwater search patterns, and surfacing unresponsive divers.
Rescue Scenarios
Apply everything you've learned in two realistic open water rescue scenarios. You'll manage a simulated dive emergency from start to finish — locating a missing diver, performing rescue breaths, executing a tow, and coordinating emergency response.
Receive Your Certification
Complete all exercises, scenarios, and the knowledge exam to earn your PADI Rescue Diver certification. This is a prerequisite for PADI Divemaster and Master Scuba Diver, and it will fundamentally change the way you dive.
Requirements — PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent). Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and first aid) training within the past 24 months. Minimum age 12. Good general health.
The PADI Rescue Diver course in Komodo typically takes 3–4 days. If you also need to complete the Emergency First Response course, add one day.
Day 1 — Knowledge Development & Self-Rescue Review
Complete classroom sessions or review eLearning topics covering self-rescue techniques, recognising diver stress, emergency management principles, and equipment problem-solving. You'll also refresh your EFR skills and complete a self-rescue review in the water.
Pro tip: Complete your eLearning before arrival to condense this day and get into the water sooner.
Day 2 — Rescue Exercises (Part 1)
Begin practising rescue exercises in open water. You'll work through scenarios including responding to panicked divers at the surface, tired diver tows, assisting distressed divers underwater, and managing air supply emergencies.
Day 3 — Rescue Exercises (Part 2) & Scenarios
Complete the remaining rescue exercises including missing diver procedures, unresponsive diver rescues, and in-water rescue breathing. Then put everything together in two full rescue scenarios — managing a simulated emergency from detection to emergency services handoff.
Congratulations! This is the course divers say changed them the most. You'll surface from your final scenario knowing you can handle almost anything the ocean throws at you.
