The PADI Rescue Diver course makes you a safer, more self-reliant diver. Learn to anticipate and manage dive emergencies, assist others underwater, and develop the awareness that sets great divers apart.
The PADI Rescue Diver course is widely regarded as the most challenging — and most rewarding — diver certification available. You'll learn to identify and manage diving emergencies, assist distressed divers, and respond effectively to underwater accidents.
The course involves realistic scenario training that requires problem-solving under pressure. Many divers say the Rescue Diver course transformed them into far more confident, aware, and capable divers overall. In Komodo, training takes place in real open-water conditions, preparing you for the genuine situations you may encounter anywhere in the world.
The Rescue Diver course is demanding wherever you do it — but Komodo's operational complexity makes it an exceptional training environment. Learning to manage dive emergencies in varied, realistic conditions builds competence that stays with you for life.

Ask about PADI Rescue DiverNot all dive centers are created equal. Here's what to look for when choosing where to do your PADI course in Komodo.
Instructor Experience
Look for instructors with hundreds of certifications completed. Ask about their rating — IDC Staff Instructors and Course Directors have the highest PADI training. Check if they speak your language fluently.
Safety Standards
Ensure they have emergency oxygen, first aid kits, and DAN insurance. Ask about their emergency action plan and evacuation procedures. Check if they service regulators annually and maintain equipment regularly.
Equipment Quality
Ask to see the equipment beforehand. Well-maintained, modern equipment (Scubapro, Mares, Apeks) works better and safer. Check BCD functionality, regulator breathing ease, and wetsuit condition.
Group Size
PADI allows up to 8 students per instructor, but smaller is better. 2–4 students means more personalised attention, a slower pace, and better skill development. Worth paying extra for.
Boat Quality
Comfortable boats with toilets, shade, and good safety equipment make long days more enjoyable. Ask about boat size, facilities, and whether they have spare boats for emergencies.
Reviews & Reputation
Read recent reviews focusing on instructor patience, safety culture, and how they handle nervous students. Consistent 4.5+ star ratings over 50+ reviews indicate reliable quality.

The PADI Rescue Diver course takes 3–4 days in Komodo, combining theory, Emergency First Response, confined water exercises, and realistic open water scenarios.
Day 1 — Theory & Emergency First Response
Classroom sessions cover rescue theory: recognising stress and panic, self-rescue, and emergency management. If your EFR is not current, this day includes the full Emergency First Response module.
Pro tip: Confirm whether your EFR is current (within 24 months) before booking — some dive centers include EFR renewal in the price, others charge separately.
Day 2 — Confined Water Rescue Exercises
Practise rescue skills in a pool or sheltered shallow water: towing a tired diver, surfacing an unresponsive diver, managing a panicked diver. These exercises build muscle memory for realistic scenarios.
Days 3–4 — Open Water Rescue Scenarios
Realistic rescue scenarios in open water inside Komodo National Park. Respond to missing diver procedures, manage underwater emergencies, and coordinate a simulated dive accident from start to emergency services.
Congratulations! Completing your final rescue scenario assessment makes you a PADI Rescue Diver — widely regarded as diving's most personally rewarding certification.
