Understanding Manta Seasons
Komodo hosts both reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) and the larger oceanic manta rays (Mobula birostris). While individual mantas can be spotted year-round, the peak aggregation season runs from December through February when plankton blooms attract hundreds of individuals to specific cleaning and feeding stations.
Best Sites for Mantas
Manta Alley (also known as Tanjung Loh) is the most reliable spot, especially during the south season. The channel between two islands creates a funnel that concentrates plankton, attracting large feeding groups. Karang Makassar (Manta Point) offers shallower encounters on a sandy bottom where mantas visit cleaning stations.
How to Behave Around Mantas
Always maintain a respectful distance of at least 3 meters. Never chase, touch, or block a manta's path. Position yourself on the reef and let them come to you. Flash photography should be avoided as it can startle these gentle giants.
Photography Tips
Use a wide-angle lens (10-17mm fisheye is ideal). Shoot upward with natural light for dramatic silhouettes, or use strobes for detail shots at cleaning stations. The best light is typically in the morning hours before 10am.
