Earn your PADI Open Water certification in one of the world's top dive destinations. Learn in Komodo's crystal-clear waters, get certified to dive to 18m, and carry a qualification that's recognised worldwide — for life.
The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world's most popular scuba certification — and Komodo National Park is one of the most spectacular places on earth to earn it. You'll learn the fundamentals of diving through a combination of online theory, confined water skills practice, and 4 open water certification dives in the biodiverse waters of the Coral Triangle.
By the end of the course, you'll be a certified diver able to dive independently to 18 meters worldwide. The certification never expires and is recognised at every PADI dive center on the planet. Most courses in Komodo run over 4–5 days, with your final dives taking place at real dive sites inside the national park.
Komodo National Park offers beginner divers an unparalleled learning environment. While the park is world-famous for its challenging drift diving and manta ray encounters, the protected bays used for diving courses provide calm, controlled conditions perfect for first-time divers.

Not all dive centers are created equal. Here's what to look for when choosing where to do your PADI course in Komodo.
Instructor Experience
Look for instructors with hundreds of certifications completed. Ask about their rating — IDC Staff Instructors and Course Directors have the highest PADI training. Check if they speak your language fluently.
Safety Standards
Ensure they have emergency oxygen, first aid kits, and DAN insurance. Ask about their emergency action plan and evacuation procedures. Check if they service regulators annually and maintain equipment regularly.
Equipment Quality
Ask to see the equipment beforehand. Well-maintained, modern equipment (Scubapro, Mares, Apeks) works better and safer. Check BCD functionality, regulator breathing ease, and wetsuit condition.
Group Size
PADI allows up to 8 students per instructor, but smaller is better. 2–4 students means more personalised attention, a slower pace, and better skill development. Worth paying extra for.
Boat Quality
Comfortable boats with toilets, shade, and good safety equipment make long days more enjoyable. Ask about boat size, facilities, and whether they have spare boats for emergencies.
Reviews & Reputation
Read recent reviews focusing on instructor patience, safety culture, and how they handle nervous students. Consistent 4.5+ star ratings over 50+ reviews indicate reliable quality.

PADI Open Water is the world's most popular scuba certification. The course follows a proven three-phase structure: theory, confined water skills practice, and open water certification dives. Most courses can be completed in Komodo in 3–4 days, or 2–3 days if you complete eLearning before arrival.
Knowledge Development
Complete the PADI eLearning modules at your own pace before arriving, or work through classroom sessions on-site with your instructor. You'll cover dive theory, equipment, safety procedures, and environmental awareness across five knowledge sections and a final exam.
Confined Water Skills
Practise essential dive skills in a pool or sheltered shallow bay under the direct supervision of your PADI instructor. Over five skill sessions, you'll master buoyancy control, mask clearing, regulator recovery, and emergency procedures until you feel confident.
Open Water Certification Dives
Complete four certification dives at real dive sites inside Komodo National Park — applying your skills in the open ocean with incredible marine life around you. Dives progress from simple skill demonstrations to guided exploration down to 18 metres.
Receive Your Certification
Pass your skills assessment and knowledge review to receive your PADI Open Water Diver certification — recognised at dive centres worldwide for life. You'll be qualified to dive independently to 18 metres anywhere in the world.
Requirements — Good general health and basic swimming ability. Minimum age 10 (or 12 for some programs in Komodo due to conditions). Must be able to swim 200 metres and float for 10 minutes unaided. No prior dive experience required.
The PADI Open Water course in Komodo takes 3–4 days. Completing eLearning before arrival reduces the course to 2–3 days of in-water training.
Day 1 — Knowledge Development
If you haven't completed eLearning beforehand, your first day is dedicated to classroom theory. You'll work through five knowledge development sections covering dive physics, equipment, safety procedures, and dive planning, followed by a final exam.
Pro tip: Complete your eLearning before arriving in Komodo to skip this day entirely and spend more time in the water.
Day 2 — Confined Water Training + Open Water Dives 1 & 2
Start the morning in a pool or sheltered bay practising core skills — buoyancy control, mask clearing, regulator recovery, emergency ascents, and buddy procedures. Once confident, head out by boat to complete your first two open water dives at protected Komodo dive sites.
Day 3 — Open Water Dives 3 & 4
Complete your final two certification dives inside Komodo National Park. These dives are more relaxed — you'll demonstrate remaining skills and enjoy guided exploration of the reef. Dive sites are selected based on conditions and tides.
Congratulations! You're now a PADI Open Water Diver! You can dive independently to 18 metres anywhere in the world, for life.
