Earn your PADI Open Water certification in one of the world's top dive destinations. Learn in Komodo's crystal-clear waters, get certified to dive to 18m, and carry a qualification that's recognised worldwide — for life.
The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world's most popular scuba certification — and Komodo National Park is one of the most spectacular places on earth to earn it. You'll learn the fundamentals of diving through a combination of online theory, confined water skills practice, and 4 open water certification dives in the biodiverse waters of the Coral Triangle.
By the end of the course, you'll be a certified diver able to dive independently to 18 meters worldwide. The certification never expires and is recognised at every PADI dive center on the planet. Most courses in Komodo run over 4–5 days, with your final dives taking place at real dive sites inside the national park.
Komodo National Park offers beginner divers an unparalleled learning environment. While the park is world-famous for its challenging drift diving and manta ray encounters, the protected bays used for diving courses provide calm, controlled conditions perfect for first-time divers.

Ask about PADI Open Water CourseNot all dive centers are created equal. Here's what to look for when choosing where to do your PADI course in Komodo.
Instructor Experience
Look for instructors with hundreds of certifications completed. Ask about their rating — IDC Staff Instructors and Course Directors have the highest PADI training. Check if they speak your language fluently.
Safety Standards
Ensure they have emergency oxygen, first aid kits, and DAN insurance. Ask about their emergency action plan and evacuation procedures. Check if they service regulators annually and maintain equipment regularly.
Equipment Quality
Ask to see the equipment beforehand. Well-maintained, modern equipment (Scubapro, Mares, Apeks) works better and safer. Check BCD functionality, regulator breathing ease, and wetsuit condition.
Group Size
PADI allows up to 8 students per instructor, but smaller is better. 2–4 students means more personalised attention, a slower pace, and better skill development. Worth paying extra for.
Boat Quality
Comfortable boats with toilets, shade, and good safety equipment make long days more enjoyable. Ask about boat size, facilities, and whether they have spare boats for emergencies.
Reviews & Reputation
Read recent reviews focusing on instructor patience, safety culture, and how they handle nervous students. Consistent 4.5+ star ratings over 50+ reviews indicate reliable quality.

Morning theory session covers diving physics, equipment, and dive planning — unless you've already completed PADI eLearning. Afternoon: confined water (pool or sheltered bay) to practise the 15 core skills.
