Ask about PADI DivemasterNot all dive centers are created equal. Here's what to look for when choosing where to do your PADI course in Komodo.
Instructor Experience
Look for instructors with hundreds of certifications completed. Ask about their rating — IDC Staff Instructors and Course Directors have the highest PADI training. Check if they speak your language fluently.
Safety Standards
Ensure they have emergency oxygen, first aid kits, and DAN insurance. Ask about their emergency action plan and evacuation procedures. Check if they service regulators annually and maintain equipment regularly.
Equipment Quality
Ask to see the equipment beforehand. Well-maintained, modern equipment (Scubapro, Mares, Apeks) works better and safer. Check BCD functionality, regulator breathing ease, and wetsuit condition.
Group Size
PADI allows up to 8 students per instructor, but smaller is better. 2–4 students means more personalised attention, a slower pace, and better skill development. Worth paying extra for.
Boat Quality
Comfortable boats with toilets, shade, and good safety equipment make long days more enjoyable. Ask about boat size, facilities, and whether they have spare boats for emergencies.
Reviews & Reputation
Read recent reviews focusing on instructor patience, safety culture, and how they handle nervous students. Consistent 4.5+ star ratings over 50+ reviews indicate reliable quality.

Complete the PADI eLearning modules at your own pace before arriving, or work through classroom sessions on-site with your instructor.
Confined Water Skills
Practice essential dive skills in a pool or sheltered shallow water under the direct supervision of your PADI-certified instructor.
Open Water Certification Dives
Complete your certification dives at real dive sites inside Komodo National Park — applying your skills in the open ocean with incredible marine life around you.
Receive Your Certification
Pass your skills assessment and knowledge review to receive your PADI certification — recognised at dive centers worldwide for life.
Requirements — Good general health and basic swimming ability. Minimum age 10 (or 12 for some programs). No prior dive experience required for beginner courses.
The PADI Divemaster program takes a minimum of 2 weeks, but most candidates spend 4–8 weeks in Komodo for thorough training and sufficient logged dives.
Week 1 — Knowledge Development & Watermanship
Review dive theory across all PADI knowledge development areas. Begin pool sessions: watermanship exercises, tired diver tow, and skin diving skills.
Week 2 — Assisting & Practical Skills
Begin assisting instructors with Open Water and Advanced courses. Lead guided dives for certified divers under supervision. Complete dive site mapping and emergency scenario training.
Weeks 3–4+ — Independent Leadership
Lead certified diver groups independently across Komodo's sites. Pass PADI Divemaster theory exams (80% required). Work toward the 60-dive minimum for certification.
Pro tip: Aim to arrive with at least 60–80 logged dives so your program stays focused on leadership training rather than accumulating required dives.
Final Assessment & Certification
Complete the full PADI Divemaster skill circuit and comprehensive theory exam. Receive your PADI Divemaster certification — you are now a dive professional.
Congratulations! Congratulations — you're a PADI Divemaster. Your Komodo-based training prepares you for professional guiding in any dive environment worldwide.
