Ask about PADI DivemasterNot all dive centers are created equal. Here's what to look for when choosing where to do your PADI course in Komodo.
Instructor Experience
Look for instructors with hundreds of certifications completed. Ask about their rating — IDC Staff Instructors and Course Directors have the highest PADI training. Check if they speak your language fluently.
Safety Standards
Ensure they have emergency oxygen, first aid kits, and DAN insurance. Ask about their emergency action plan and evacuation procedures. Check if they service regulators annually and maintain equipment regularly.
Equipment Quality
Ask to see the equipment beforehand. Well-maintained, modern equipment (Scubapro, Mares, Apeks) works better and safer. Check BCD functionality, regulator breathing ease, and wetsuit condition.
Group Size
PADI allows up to 8 students per instructor, but smaller is better. 2–4 students means more personalised attention, a slower pace, and better skill development. Worth paying extra for.
Boat Quality
Comfortable boats with toilets, shade, and good safety equipment make long days more enjoyable. Ask about boat size, facilities, and whether they have spare boats for emergencies.
Reviews & Reputation
Read recent reviews focusing on instructor patience, safety culture, and how they handle nervous students. Consistent 4.5+ star ratings over 50+ reviews indicate reliable quality.

Water Skills & Stamina Tests
Demonstrate your fitness and water confidence through a series of timed assessments: a 400-metre swim, an 800-metre snorkel swim, a 15-minute water tread, a 100-metre tired diver tow, and an underwater equipment exchange with a buddy.
Practical Skills & Workshops
Perform 24 dive skills at demonstration quality, complete mapping and navigation exercises, and participate in hands-on workshops including conducting a Discover Scuba Diving program, leading a ReActivate session, running a skin diver course, and assisting on real training dives.
Practical Assessments & Internship
Apply your skills in real-world scenarios by assisting PADI Instructors with courses, guiding certified divers on Komodo dive sites, conducting dive briefings, managing dive logistics, and creating emergency action plans. You'll need a minimum of 60 logged dives to complete the program.
