Komodo is an ideal location for deep diving training — the park's underwater walls, pinnacles, and channels offer natural depth profiles with outstanding visibility. Sites like the deep walls near Horseshoe Bay and the drop-offs at Batu Bolong provide genuine deep diving scenarios with rich marine life at every level. Prerequisites: PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent.
Komodo's underwater topography is ideal for deep diving training. Dramatic walls dropping to 40m+, pristine deep reef structures, and consistently good visibility make it one of the best locations in Southeast Asia for this specialty.

Not all dive centers are created equal. Here's what to look for when choosing where to do your PADI course in Komodo.
Instructor Experience
Look for instructors with hundreds of certifications completed. Ask about their rating — IDC Staff Instructors and Course Directors have the highest PADI training. Check if they speak your language fluently.
Safety Standards
Ensure they have emergency oxygen, first aid kits, and DAN insurance. Ask about their emergency action plan and evacuation procedures. Check if they service regulators annually and maintain equipment regularly.
Equipment Quality
Ask to see the equipment beforehand. Well-maintained, modern equipment (Scubapro, Mares, Apeks) works better and safer. Check BCD functionality, regulator breathing ease, and wetsuit condition.
Group Size
PADI allows up to 8 students per instructor, but smaller is better. 2–4 students means more personalised attention, a slower pace, and better skill development. Worth paying extra for.
Boat Quality
Comfortable boats with toilets, shade, and good safety equipment make long days more enjoyable. Ask about boat size, facilities, and whether they have spare boats for emergencies.
Reviews & Reputation
Read recent reviews focusing on instructor patience, safety culture, and how they handle nervous students. Consistent 4.5+ star ratings over 50+ reviews indicate reliable quality.

The PADI Deep Diver Specialty opens up a new world below 18 metres, teaching you to plan and safely execute dives to a maximum depth of 40 metres. Komodo's deep walls, pinnacles, and channels make it an ideal place to develop these skills. The course typically takes 2 days.
Knowledge Development
Complete the theory covering deep dive planning, gas management at depth, nitrogen narcosis recognition, safety stops and emergency decompression, and the physiological effects of breathing compressed air at increased pressure.
Deep Dives One & Two
Your first two deep dives focus on building comfort at depth. You'll practise planning a safe deep dive profile, monitoring your gas supply, performing a safety stop, and recognising the early signs of narcosis — typically at depths between 18 and 30 metres.
Deep Dives Three & Four
Your final two dives push progressively deeper — up to 40 metres. You'll practise emergency decompression procedures, buddy contact protocols at depth, and the practical skills needed to enjoy deep diving safely and confidently.
Receive Your Certification
Complete all four dives and the knowledge reviews to earn your PADI Deep Diver Specialty certification. Your certified depth limit increases to 40 metres, giving you access to Komodo's most spectacular deep sites.
Requirements — PADI Adventure Diver certification or higher (or equivalent). Minimum age 15. Must have completed a Deep Adventure Dive or equivalent. Good general health.
The PADI Deep Diver Specialty in Komodo takes 2 days with four progressively deeper dives. Komodo's dramatic underwater topography provides ideal deep diving training environments.
Day 1 — Deep Dives 1 & 2
Start with a knowledge review on deep dive planning, gas management, and narcosis. Your first two dives take you to depths between 18 and 30 metres, where you'll practise planning a deep dive profile, monitoring gas supply, performing safety stops, and recognising early signs of narcosis.
Pro tip: Monitor your gas closely at depth — you'll consume air significantly faster below 20 metres. Plan your turnaround point conservatively.
Day 2 — Deep Dives 3 & 4
Your final two dives push progressively to the full 40-metre depth limit. You'll practise emergency decompression procedures, buddy contact protocols at depth, and the practical skills needed for safe deep exploration of Komodo's walls and pinnacles.
Congratulations! You're now certified to dive to 40 metres — unlocking Komodo's deepest walls, pinnacles, and channels where pelagic encounters are most common.
