Pygmy seahorses are among the most sought-after macro subjects in underwater photography, and Komodo is one of the best places in the world to find them. These tiny creatures, barely visible to the naked eye, live exclusively on gorgonian sea fans.
| Species | Size | Host | Colour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bargibant's pygmy seahorse (H. bargibanti) | ~2cm | Muricella gorgonian fans | Pink with red tubercles, or yellow/orange matching their host fan |
| Denise's pygmy seahorse (H. denise) | ~1.5cm | Various gorgonian fans | Orange-yellow, smoother body than Bargibanti |
| Pontoh's pygmy seahorse (H. pontohi) | ~1.7cm | Halimeda algae, hydroids | White with red or pink markings |
Pygmy seahorses are nearly impossible to spot without guidance. They are perfectly camouflaged against their host gorgonian — same colour, same texture, same size as the fan's polyps. Experienced Komodo guides know which specific fans have resident pygmies and check them regularly. When found, the guide will point with a dive stick (never touching the fan or the seahorse) and allow each diver to observe in turn.
