Komodo has three primary manta ray sites, each offering a different type of encounter. The best site for you depends on your certification level, trip type, and what season you are visiting.
| Site | Zone | Depth | Current | Access | Best Season | Encounter Style |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manta Point (Karang Makassar) | Central | 5–15m | Mild drift | Day trip + liveaboard | Year-round (best Dec–Apr) | Cleaning station — individual mantas circling over coral bommies |
| Manta Alley | South | 5–40m | Mild to moderate | Liveaboard only | November–April | Massive aggregations — 20–50+ mantas chain feeding and mating |
| Mawan | Central | 5–20m | Mild | Day trip + liveaboard | Year-round | Intimate encounters — fewer mantas but less crowded, great for photography |
For first-time manta encounters: Manta Point (Karang Makassar) is the ideal choice. It is shallow, calm, suitable for all certification levels including snorkellers, and has an approximately 80% encounter probability on any given day. The cleaning station behaviour allows extended, close-up observation.
For maximum manta spectacle: Manta Alley in south Komodo during December to February delivers the most jaw-dropping encounters in the park — aggregations of 20 to 50+ mantas feeding in the plankton-rich water. This requires a liveaboard and a tolerance for cold water (19–24°C) and reduced visibility (5–15m).
For photographers: Mawan offers more intimate encounters with fewer divers present, allowing careful positioning and extended time with individual mantas. The water is clearer than at Manta Point, making it better for wide-angle photography.
