Recommended Dive Experience for Komodo
The number of logged dives you need depends on your certification level and which sites you want to dive. Here is a realistic guide based on what Komodo's conditions demand.
Experience Recommendations by Trip Type
| Trip Type | Minimum Cert | Recommended Dives | Why |
|---|
| Day trips — beginner sites only | OWD | 1+ (freshly certified is fine) | Calm sites with mild currents, close supervision |
| Day trips — including advanced sites | AOW | 30+ | Strong currents, drift diving, negative entries at Batu Bolong etc. |
| Budget liveaboard | OWD | 20–30 | Visiting mix of sites, need comfort in variable conditions |
| Mid-range liveaboard | AOW | 30–50 | Covering all zones including challenging north and cold south |
| Luxury / expedition liveaboard | AOW | 50+ | Advanced itineraries, remote sites, high expectations for diver competence |
What Matters More Than Numbers
Logged dives alone do not tell the full story. An Open Water diver with 15 dives in strong current environments (like Cozumel or the Galápagos) may be more prepared than someone with 40 dives in calm tropical reefs. The skills that matter most for Komodo are:
- Drift diving experience: Comfort with moving water and live-boat pickups
- Good buoyancy control: The ability to hover motionless at any depth and avoid contact with the reef
- Efficient air consumption: Strong currents increase breathing rate; divers who consume air quickly will have shorter dives
- Negative entry proficiency: Ability to descend quickly upon entering the water without surface gathering
- SMB deployment: Confident deployment of a Surface Marker Buoy from depth while maintaining buoyancy
What If I Do Not Have Enough Experience?
If your dive count is below the recommendations, you have several options:
- Start with beginner sites: Book 2 to 3 days of day trip diving at calm sites and build skills before attempting advanced sites
- Take a refresher: If it has been more than 6 months since your last dive, many operators offer a free or low-cost scuba refresher session
- Get AOW in Komodo: The 2-day AOW course adds 5 logged dives and teaches the specific skills needed for Komodo diving
- Be honest with your operator: Tell your dive centre your true experience level. They will select appropriate sites and may pair you with a more experienced guide
