Yes, beginners can absolutely dive in Komodo — with some important caveats. The park has sites suitable for every experience level, but not all sites are beginner-friendly. Understanding this distinction is key to having a safe and enjoyable trip.
| Site | Max Depth | Current | Why It's Great for Beginners |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siaba Besar | 18m | Minimal | Calm water, resident turtles, excellent coral — like diving in a tropical aquarium |
| Sebayur Kecil | 18m | Minimal | Protected bay, good for check dives and rebuilding confidence |
| Manta Point (Karang Makassar) | 15m | Mild drift | Shallow, sandy bottom, manta ray encounters — a life-changing first experience |
| Tatawa Besar | 25m | Gentle drift | Beautiful coral gardens on an easy drift — ideal first drift dive |
| Batu Monco | 18m | Mild | Sheltered, colourful reef, excellent for photography |
As a beginner, you will miss out on Komodo's most famous sites — Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, and The Cauldron all require Advanced Open Water certification and strong drift diving skills. However, the beginner-friendly sites are genuinely excellent. Swimming with manta rays at Manta Point is possible as a newly certified Open Water diver, and many experienced divers say it remains the single best dive they have ever done.
Our advice: If time allows, consider completing your Open Water certification in Labuan Bajo (3–4 days) followed by a few days of fun diving at beginner-friendly sites. Alternatively, get certified at home and book at least 3 dive days in Komodo to make the most of the sites available to you.
