Not all dive centers are created equal. Here's what to look for when choosing where to do your PADI course in Komodo.
Instructor Experience
Look for instructors with hundreds of certifications completed. Ask about their rating — IDC Staff Instructors and Course Directors have the highest PADI training. Check if they speak your language fluently.
Safety Standards
Ensure they have emergency oxygen, first aid kits, and DAN insurance. Ask about their emergency action plan and evacuation procedures. Check if they service regulators annually and maintain equipment regularly.
Equipment Quality
Ask to see the equipment beforehand. Well-maintained, modern equipment (Scubapro, Mares, Apeks) works better and safer. Check BCD functionality, regulator breathing ease, and wetsuit condition.
Group Size
PADI allows up to 8 students per instructor, but smaller is better. 2–4 students means more personalised attention, a slower pace, and better skill development. Worth paying extra for.
Boat Quality
Comfortable boats with toilets, shade, and good safety equipment make long days more enjoyable. Ask about boat size, facilities, and whether they have spare boats for emergencies.
Reviews & Reputation
Read recent reviews focusing on instructor patience, safety culture, and how they handle nervous students. Consistent 4.5+ star ratings over 50+ reviews indicate reliable quality.

Knowledge Development
Learn the fundamentals of underwater photography including camera settings, lighting principles, composition techniques, how to minimise backscatter, and how to approach marine life responsibly for better shots.
Photo Dive One
Your first dive focuses on getting comfortable with your camera underwater. You'll practise basic techniques for wide-angle and close-up photography, managing buoyancy while shooting, and using natural light effectively.
Photo Dive Two
On your second dive, you'll refine your skills — experimenting with composition, different angles, and strobes or video lights if available. Your instructor provides coaching on capturing Komodo's signature marine life.
Receive Your Certification
Complete both dives, review your images with your instructor, and finish the knowledge review to earn your PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty certification.
Requirements — PADI Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent). Minimum age 10. An underwater camera is required — many dive centres in Komodo offer camera rentals.
The PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty in Komodo typically takes 1–2 days with two photo dives. Komodo's incredible biodiversity provides endless subject matter for underwater photography.
Session 1 — Theory & Photo Dive 1
Start with a knowledge review covering camera basics, underwater lighting, composition rules, minimising backscatter, and approaching marine life responsibly. Then head out for your first photo dive focusing on getting comfortable shooting underwater and managing buoyancy while using a camera.
Pro tip: Get close, then get closer. Water absorbs light and colour rapidly — the closer you are to your subject, the sharper and more colourful your images will be.
Session 2 — Photo Dive 2 & Image Review
On your second dive, your instructor coaches you on more advanced techniques — shooting angles, using strobes or video lights, macro versus wide-angle approaches, and capturing Komodo's signature species. After the dive, review your images together and get personalised feedback.
Congratulations! You're now a certified PADI Digital Underwater Photographer. Komodo's manta rays, turtles, and vibrant reefs are waiting for your lens.
