Night Diving in Komodo
Night diving in Komodo offers an entirely different underwater experience. The reefs transform after dark as nocturnal predators emerge, corals extend their feeding polyps, and rare critters appear that are invisible during the day.
Night Dive Availability
| Trip Type | Night Dives Available? | Details |
|---|
| Day trips from Labuan Bajo | Rarely / Not standard | Day boats return to harbour before dark. Some operators offer special evening departures. |
| Liveaboards | Yes — standard on most itineraries | Typically 1–3 night dives during a multi-day trip, depending on the itinerary and conditions. |
Best Night Dive Sites
- Gili Lawa Laut: A favourite liveaboard night dive location. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows, Spanish dancers (giant nudibranchs) emerge, and sleeping turtles rest on the reef.
- Wainilu: Komodo's premier muck diving spot transforms at night with mandarin fish, bobtail squid, and hunting lionfish.
- Sebayur Kecil: Sheltered location close to Labuan Bajo, making it one of the few night dive options for land-based divers. Good macro life.
- Horseshoe Bay (near Rinca): Excellent for macro critters — ornate ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp, and banded sea kraits hunting along the reef.
What You Will See at Night
- Spanish dancers — large, spectacularly coloured nudibranchs that swim by undulating their bodies
- Coral polyps — hard corals extend their feeding tentacles, transforming the reef into a fuzzy, textured landscape
- Hunting lionfish — using their wing-like pectoral fins to corner prey against the reef
- Sleeping turtles — wedged into coral crevices, oblivious to divers
- Cuttlefish and octopus — actively hunting and displaying hypnotic colour changes
- Bioluminescence — turn off your torch briefly and wave your hand to see the water sparkle with microscopic light-producing organisms
Night Dive Requirements
- Certification: PADI Night Diver Specialty or Advanced Open Water (which includes a night dive) is helpful but not always required. Most liveaboards accept any certified diver with a minimum number of logged dives.
- Equipment: Primary dive torch, backup torch, and an SMB or light stick for surface identification. Some liveaboards provide torches; bringing your own is recommended.
- Conditions: Night dives are conducted in sheltered bays with minimal current, making them accessible to intermediate divers.
