Try Scuba Program
Our Try Scuba program is designed for individuals without prior diving certification who wish to experience scuba diving safely and enjoyably.
Not all dive centers are created equal. Here's what to look for when choosing where to do your SSI course in Komodo.
Instructor Experience
Look for SSI instructors at Diamond or Elite certification level — the highest SSI instructor ratings. Ask how many certifications they've completed and whether they specialise in your target program.
Safety Standards
Ensure they have emergency oxygen, first aid kits, and DAN insurance on every boat. Ask about emergency protocols and equipment servicing schedules — SSI centres should follow SSI safe diving standards.
Equipment Quality
Ask to see the student equipment before committing. Modern, well-maintained gear from recognised brands (Scubapro, Mares, Cressi) ensures a better and safer learning experience.
Group Size
Smaller student groups mean better instructor attention and faster skill development. Look for centres offering 2–4 students per instructor rather than filling sessions to maximum capacity.
Boat Quality
Long days at sea require comfortable, well-equipped boats. Check for shade, toilets, safety gear, and a clean dive deck. A good boat makes your training days significantly more enjoyable.
Reviews & Reputation
Read recent reviews focusing on instructor communication, patience, and how the centre handles students who progress at different speeds. Consistent high ratings over many reviews are a strong signal.

The SSI Try Scuba program is a supervised introduction to breathing underwater — no certification or prior experience required. In Komodo, the experience takes half a day to a full day, with the option to extend into open water with the Try Scuba Diving upgrade.
Safety Briefing & Academic Review
Your SSI instructor covers basic diving concepts, hand signals, equalisation techniques, and equipment familiarisation. You'll complete a short academic review to make sure you're comfortable with what to expect underwater.
Confined Water Session
In a pool or calm, sheltered bay, you practise breathing through a regulator, clearing your mask, and controlling your position underwater. The maximum depth is 5 metres, and your instructor stays within arm's reach at all times.
Open Water Dive (Try Scuba Diving Upgrade)
If you choose the Try Scuba Diving option, head out by boat to a sheltered dive site inside Komodo National Park for a supervised ocean dive to a maximum of 12 metres. This is where you'll experience the reef, fish, and corals firsthand.
Optional Second Dive
Many Komodo dive centres offer a second open water dive at a different site. You'll feel more relaxed and can focus entirely on enjoying the marine life. This experience can also be credited toward a future SSI Open Water Diver course.
Requirements — Good general health and basic comfort in water. Minimum age 8 for pool-only Try Scuba, minimum age 10 for Try Scuba Diving (open water). No prior dive experience required. A medical questionnaire must be completed.
The SSI Try Scuba experience takes half a day to a full day and requires no prior experience or preparation.
Morning — Briefing & Confined Water Session
Your instructor introduces basic diving concepts, hand signals, and equipment. You practise breathing underwater, mask clearing, and basic buoyancy in a pool or calm, sheltered bay to a maximum depth of 5 metres.
Pro tip: Breathe slowly and continuously — never hold your breath. This is the single most important rule in scuba diving.
Late Morning — First Ocean Dive (Try Scuba Diving)
Head out by boat to a calm, sheltered dive site inside Komodo National Park. Your instructor guides you through a supervised dive to a maximum of 12 metres.
