While most diving information focuses on underwater conditions, surface conditions — the sea state during your boat transit and between dives — are equally important for comfort and safety.
| Season | Typical Sea State | Wind | Boat Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry season (Apr–Nov) | Calm to moderate, 0.5–1.5m swells | Steady SE trade winds, 10–20 knots | Generally comfortable, smooth transits |
| Wet season (Dec–Mar) | Moderate to rough, 1–2.5m swells possible | Variable NW monsoon, gusty periods | Can be uncomfortable, especially open water crossings |
| Transition (Apr–May, Oct–Nov) | Calm, 0.5–1m | Light and variable | Usually the most comfortable boat conditions |
The boat ride from Labuan Bajo to Komodo's dive sites takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours on traditional boats. During the wet season or windy periods, this crossing can be choppy and uncomfortable for those prone to motion sickness.
Liveaboards anchor in sheltered bays overnight, so sleeping conditions are usually calm. Motion is most noticeable during transits between dive zones. Larger vessels (30m+) and steel-hulled boats provide the most stable ride. Budget liveaboards on smaller traditional boats will feel more motion.
Comfort tip: If you know you are sensitive to boat motion, choose a mid-range or larger liveaboard, select the dry season for your trip, and bring seasickness medication as a precaution.
